MoM - 9 Dec 2009: Joyful Giving

Our first ever Christmas themed meeting took place in the usual venue, at the Kemiri restaurant. This time, we had extra icings for the special meeting: wonderful Christmas songs during dinner and a beautiful Christmas tree complete with the presents (Thanks to our special meeting team: TM Jessica, CC Martin, TM Billy and TM Ronald). The theme for the meeting was “Joyful Giving” and the Toastmaster of the Meeting was none other than our treasurer TM Jessica.

The general evaluator for the meeting was visiting Toastmaster, CC Irene and her evaluation team is as follows. TM Ronald (Timer); TM Rama (Grammarian); Ah/WOD Counter (TM Helda) and Ballot Counter (ACG CL Boon)

The table topic session was conducted by TM Ronald and involved answering tricky questions, which involved quick thinking. The table topics speakers included CC Rina, Nina, and TM Rama.

Following the Table Topics session we had a game session conducted by TM Billy. Everyone was divided into 2 groups and competed in 2 games designed to test our communications skills. The first game was similar to Simon Says, but aptly renamed Billy Says (^___^).

The second game involved communicating a message using nothing but body language. It was fun, yet it required high creativity and thinking out of the box. So, guys... Any idea how would you act to get your friends to guess “Kung Fu Panda” or “Sailormoon”?

There were 5 prepared speeches on that day.

First, TM Leonardi spoke on gestures and how they have different meanings in different cultures and was evaluated by CC Rina. This was followed by TM Billy who spoke on google and using it to answer virtually any question and was evaluated by TM Rama. Next CC Martin presented on the pros of opening a casino in Indonesia and was evaluated by CTM Dave. Following this ACB CL David told us a story about the pride of being the last and his previous racing experience and was evaluated by DTM Arlan. Finally, CC Niken told us an entertaining story about the Wizard of Menlo Park and was evaluated by ACG CL Boon.

The best Table Topics speaker for the evening was TM Rama, the best evaluator was ACG CL Boon and the best prepared speech was delivered by CC Martin.

After the award session, we thanked our lovely visiting Toastmaster, CC Irene who has helped us tremendously during the meeting (as always). Then, everyone hurried to the Christmas tree for photo session and to get their gifts (provided Santa agreed they are behaving nice this year). Good to know that we couldn’t recall anyone went home empty handed ^^

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year... Until 6th of January 2010

MoM – 25 Nov 2009: A Thankful Heart can Do Wonders

Our meeting this time was “warm and sweet”- The number of attendees was not too many, yet the meeting’s atmosphere was still very enjoyable. Not to mention how interesting for us to know our member’s sibling better since we had a new guest: Edwin (CC CL Martin’s brother).

Our president, CC Niken began the meeting with transferring the VPM position from TM Hendy to TM Billy (Good luck with your new job in a new city, TM Hendy!). After that, CTM Dave as the ToM took the control by telling us about Thanksgiving history and how a thankful heart can do wonders.

DTM Arlan was the General Evaluator and that night he shared with us how thankful he is to be part of Toastmasters. He then introduced all the General Evaluator team: TM Helda as Timer, TM Anita as Grammarian, CC CL Martin as Ah / WoD counter, and TM Billy as Ballot Counter.

Before the Table Topic session was started, CC Niken as the Table Topic Master said that she is very thankful for her family and her friends. The Table Topic Speakers were CC Pauline, CC CL Martin, Guest Edwin, TM Billy, and TM Ronald.

Now we have come to the highlight of the meeting - Prepared Speech session. ACB ALB David was the first speaker with “Fear of Loss” as the title. It was very inspiring and eye-opening that “People are more sensitive to loss than to gain something”.

The second speaker was CC Rina with “Crow Brings Daylight”. She delivered an amazing folktale from storytelling manual. She told us the origin of daylight in North Pole, thanks to the Crow!

TM Rama gave his persuasive speech “Boxing”. He used a perfect metaphor (boxing) to describe public speaking. He said both boxing and public speaking have 3 important elements: Condition, Technique, and Mental toughness. At the end he persuaded us to bring our public speaking skill to the next level. All were done in entertaining manners!

TM Ronald was the last speaker, delivering “Sae Weng Losing a horse”. It was an old Chinese story and he reminded us that in life, we should not too focused on our problems, rather we should treat the problems as “blessing in disguise”.

The last session was the Evaluation session. The Evaluators were CC Pauline, CC CL Martin, CC Niken, and DTM Arlan.

MoM - 11 Nov 2009: Simplicity

Our meeting on November 11th,
2009 was conducted differently. In the absent of the President of the club, the
meeting was opened by our VPE, CC Rina Loekiandari. Though it was first for her
to open and adjourn the meeting, she did it amazingly with light jokes to warm
up the atmosphere.

Our theme that day was SIMPLICITY, which inspired our Table Topic Master, ACB CL David Pranata to make the table topic question as SIMPLE as it can and required the participants to answer the questions NOT as SIMPLE (read: creative) as they can. Surprisingly all 5 participants: Rama, Helda, Juwati, Ronald, Tjokro, and Nina managed to do it well and they were all qualified to be voted as the Best Table Topic Speaker. This time we had 3 speakers during the prepared speech session. Our new member, TM Ketut delivered his first speech well with great level of confidence. Then TM Billy made the meeting even better with a ‘mysterious’ personal story. At last, TM Jessica went all out and creative with vocal variety that kept us awake throughout her speech that was evaluated by TM Rama.
We then were entertained by the evaluation of 3 critical and supportive evaluators: ACB CL David, DTM Arlan and TM Rama who delivered their best appraisal.

Finally, we came to the moment we had been waiting for: The Award Session! The Best table Topic was won by TM Rama, The Best Evaluator was won by ACL CL David and The Best Speaker was won by TM Jessica.

Although the meeting duration was a lot shorter than usual, it’s been a wonderful meeting, especially for the guests! Guess what?? The three guests are joining our beloved club! Hurray!

MoM - 28 Oct 2009: Halloween Special Edition

Today is very special, as we are celebrating Halloween!! ... Everyone dressed up differently and went straight to Kemiri, Room 2. We had a smaller and warmer room compared to our usual venue then. Yet, it didn't slow down our Halloween celebration.

Once we stepped in, we can see lots of newspaper used as decoration and pumpkin pictures all around the chairs. Of course, we almost couldn't recognize one another, so we began by introducing ourselves:

TM Jessica               Cute Witch
CTM Dave               Toastmasters Man
TM Rama                 Bollywood Star
TM Anda                  Dracula
TM Billy                   The Viking
CC Niken                 Bunny
ACG, CL Boon        Mad Scientist
TM Ronald               Chucky
CC Martin                Red Devil 1*
TM Amilia                Red Devil 2*
CC Rina                   Red Devil 3*
ACS, ALS David     Orange Devil*

To top op the Halloween atmosphere, the Table Topics & Game Master, a.k.a TM Jessica called upon 2 couples (TM Anda-TM Rina & TM Ketut-Fanny) to play “The Mummy Games”. The girls must changed their partner to be an instant Mummy using tissue roll, while the mummy should take the emblem as fast as possible. The pair who completed the task first is the winning pair - TM Ketut-Fanny

After having such entertainments with Mummy and make-over team, we entered the Table Topics Session.

First person T/T speaker was TM Agatha and the question was “If you were a Dracula, you will choose who to be bite?”

TM Helda answered she didn’t want to choose any, but since she is a Dracula and she needs blood to survive, she will bite her boyfriend. Because she only has one and irreplacable Father, Mother, and siblings. But she can find another boyfriend. Also she thinks that Dracula would only survive to live in Europe, not in Indonesia, so no problemo about biting her boyfriend ^^
The 2nd Table Topic speaker was CTM Dave and he said that he rather bite his wife. Because Dracula bites go around the neck and he considers it is close to kissing, so it would be easier for him to have a successful bite - he wouln't mind go biting his wife ^^

During this special meeting, we had one Educational Session will be delivered by ACB ALS David Pranata. He delivered “How to begin your speech”. First impression is crucial and this can cause Love at the First Sight. Here, he offered ways to get your initial 40 seconds attention-getting.

Then, meeting was continued with a few words from CC Martin, our Division G's representative for Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest District level, Genting Highlands, Malaysia.

He thanked everyone's support along the way and a special thanks to CTM Dave, for becoming his awesome mentor, ACG, CL Boon, for great editting skill, and TM Rama, for evaluating his draft and great encouragement. Although joining Disctrict competition is not easy, but he felt that it boosts his speaking skill tremendously. It made him to come back with a new determination: There is no limit to be better; it will expand your horizon. There is no substitute for the experience itself. Go with fear about public speaking, and I wish you all the best in public speaking. The only place that you can become a master is on graveyard. Thus, hope to meet you all at our next D-51 Convention in Miri.

For now, Happy Halloween fellow Surabaya Toastmasters!

MoM - 14 Oct 2009: Get Going and Be the Winner

The meeting was held at the usual venue, Kemiri Restaurant, and began with an excellent dinner followed by the meeting.

There were three guests, Cindy, Theo and Henry. Cindy had actually heard about the club from Dave and Annie Pearman and had invested further by checking out the club blog before deciding to come. Theo was Billy’s guest.

Following the guest introductions three new Toastmasters were inducted by CC Rina, the VP of Education, into the club. The new Toastmasters included TM Anda, TM Aris, TM Hugosan and TM Billy.

The Toastmaster of the Meeting was TM Leonardi and the theme for the evening’s meeting was “Get Going and Be the Winner”. The whole evening resonated with the theme, whose message was about challenging ourselves and becoming winners.

The Table Topics Session was lead by TM Billy and there were five participants (TM Ronald, TM Aris and TM Hugosan (who worked as a pair), TM Zenny, TM Juwati and TM Lucy). The theme of the Table Topics session was well prepared, stayed true to the theme of the meeting and included topics about challenge and being a winner.

For the prepared speech session there were three prepared speeches from TM Anda, TM Amilia and CC Niken.

TM Anda was working on BM#1 and told the audience about his work history, the challenges he’s faced and his dreams for the future. Impressively, he delivered his speech without notes. He was evaluated by TM Juwati.

TM Amelia was working on BM#6 and spoke about the importance of challenge and provided practical career building tips. She was evaluated by CC Rina.

Finally, CC Niken was working on AM#3 from the Storytelling Manual. She told the story of a diligent mouse and his end of year thanksgiving parties. She was evaluated by CC Pauline.
The evaluation session was conducted a bit differently than the usual evaluation sessions, starting with a table topics evaluation, conducted by ACB CL David. He provided both valuable evaluations and tips for the table topics speakers. He stressed the importance of using the PREP (Point Reason Example Point) model for impromptu speeches.

MoM - 30 Sept 2009: The Power of Forgiving

The meeting on Wednesday 30 September 2009 was the first meeting held after the long holiday of the Festive Season Idul Fitri. Therefore the Toasmasters of The Meeting Jessica brought an idea of “Contrary Fact of Forgivess” as the meeting theme. Her opening was a remembrance of her friendship where forgiveness take whole part of the story. Also this is the time when we all return to our homebase – Kemiri Restaurant, after a month having a meeting in 2 different places.

This meeting also showed how effective a publication through the website is. Most of the guests found out about the club when they surfed. Our website is just a month away and we’re already have benefit from it.

Combined with the creativity of the Table Topic Master Pauline, she appeared with a box full of stuffs, the idea she had was that the Speaker would take any of the stuff and tell everything about it. On Table Topic Session, where Speaker stand up and delivers an impromptu speech, stories came out of the box when a box of cookies, postcard are picked up.

During prepared speech session, there are 4 speakers. TM Youngky on Basic Manual #1 (Ice Breaker) titled “I, Me and Myself”. Ice Breaker as the first project for the new member to encourage them delivering their speech. TM Youngky told the audience his childhood memories in Kalimantan and his journey of studies which then brought him up to Surabaya up to today.

The other speakers were TM Anita on BM# 2 (Organize Your Speech) titled Perception & Behaviour, TM Ronald BM#4 (How to Say it) titled “ On Purpose Person: the Beginning Three Steps" and ACB ALS David on Storytelling#2 (Let’s Get Personal) titled “It’s Not a Race”.

MoM - 16 Sept 2009: Feel The Burn

We had a new venue (again!) and this time was at Pecel Bu Kus, Barata Jaya. All of us were excited with the new environment.

The meeting's attendance was great and we've got a friendly guest: Rizal, and 2 special visiting Toastmasters: Irene Budi Prastiwi (President of Dynamic Toastmasters Club) and Johan Budiyanto (President of IEU Toastmasters Club).

Before the meeting started, we enjoyed the full introduction of our Exco team for 2009-2010, then witnessed a colourful Induction Ceremony for our newest member, TM Ketut.

The Toastmaster of the night, TM Rama, began the meeting by letting us know how important it is for us to always “Feel The Burn”.. and surprisingly everyone used the word “Burn” as the second Word of the Day..

During Table Topics, we had many hillarious moments as ACG CL Boon created a new style of table topics! Volunteers were called upon in pairs, one as a speaker and one as a gesturer. It has never been done before!

Although we only had 2 prepared speech speakers, we've been very much entertained by all of them. The first speaker was TM Billy and his speech stated the hillarious facts on the differences being female VS male. He was evaluated by TM Jessica.

While the second speaker, TM Pauline, inspired us how to be the fabolous flamboyant in our lives. She was evaluated by CC Irene. Having done her 10th speech from Basic Manual, TM Pauline is now officially Competent Communicator Pauline (Hurrayy!!).

On educational session, we learnt something new from CC Martin, who delivered “Evaluate to Motivate”.

At the end of the meeting, TM Leo as the GE referred the meeting as a creative meeting with a lot of new things. In TM Leo's perspective, new things are good for Toastmasters meeting.

Best Evaluator : TM Irene
