What does Surabaya Toastmasters mean to you?

Surabaya Toastmasters have helped us to be better throughout the years, so let's share your valuable comment on how it improves yourself:

  1. I involved myself in Toastmaster simply with the initial intent of self-improvement. Sharpening my skill in public speaking was my interest and when I was told about the club, I was enthusiastic about it. I volunteered myself to be the first VPE as I believed that the programs described would also benefit people. Also what's better than having a group of peole who share the same goals in learning?

For selfish reason I also hope that people can communicate to me more effectively and I in return. I also wanted to use the toastmaster platform to find out about the people that lived around me. I want to know their culture, likes and dislikes, and why they think the way they do.

As Charles Peguy said, "Love is rarer than genius itself. And friendship is rarer still." In Toastmaster we find wonderful people and some became your friends. It is a platform where people meet face to face, sharing your experience through interaction and via speeches. You begin to understand people more espcially those who think differently. You learn to see their point of view and vice versa. It is through this friendship and contacts made that blessings come discreetly and sometimes surprisingly enriching!

    Yours Sincerely,
    Boon

  2. My experience in Toastmaster is not only enjoyable but beneficial as well. I become more and more capable of doing things in my professional as well as my personal life. It may sound cliche but it's a reality. I did not notice it until I looked back what I have achieved,

One important thing I learn a lot from Toastmaster is that : If you conceive it, you believe it, you can achieve it. You have a lot of resources available to help you. It's all your call to utilize them. Toastmaster is a perfect training ground to improve your communication and leadership skills. Use those important tools to achieve your dreams.

My mentors used to encourage me, if you have an idea, you should act on it. If you want it you can do it. I think the main barrier that keeping people from achieving success is more internal than external. I truly believe that anybody has the capacity to achieve anything as long as they really work hard on it. They should live to the highest visions.

One example, I used to dream to have our own division in Surabaya. Therefore we don't have to send members to Jakarta to have training or to take part in contest. That way we can develop faster and more and more people can benefit from it. Today we have 11 clubs in Surabaya and the vision has become a reality. It did not just happen by itself. There was a lot of hard work in communication and leadership. It's all in the manuals.
    It is learnable.

  3. "Before I join Toastmasters, I felt that I couldn't talk English fluently and felt so awkward when talking with other people. But Toastmasters teaches me how to speak English well in front of people. Moreover, it gives me a lot of confidence and courage too. The greatest experience that I can take from Toastmasters is that I can learn how to organize an event/other people. This is the first time I know how to do it. Therefore, thank you Toastmasters for teaching this. I hope Surabaya Toastmasters Club can grow better and better in the future!"

  4. “Before I join Toastmaster, I felt terrible standing in front of people and little support that I get from audience makes me worst. After I felt the Toastmaster “atmosphere” I can build my confidence, and believe that Communication & Leadership Skills can be learnt! Every one can be a great Communicator & great Leader in the future”

  5. I heard about Toastmaster in 2002 from my ex-boss (Mr. Hartono Rahardjo, who know it from his ex-boss also, Mr. Prijohandojo Kristanto). Unfortunately, there was no Toastmaster club in Surabaya that day (the first club which is Surabaya Toastmaster Club, established in 2004).

The time goes by... and in 2009 Ms Zenny (ex staff of my ex boss), called me and asked me to come to Surabaya Toastmaster Club Meeting. It was my first experience to come to such a friendly English speaking community where mistakes are the milestones to perfection. It is a caring and serving community to let you grow in English speaking and leadership skills.

    Come and join us!

  7. I am a type of person who don't really care about other, rarely greeting other people and had difficulty in talking to others.
But in TM I have to greet, give admiration, and get into a conversation and I find those things are good habit that I have to continue doing and I learn the importance of appreciating people from TM.. and In terms of writing and speaking ability, I must admit that TM has so much contribution in improving it.
